Self-Care for Success
Successful people almost always establish and use a “resource team” for help in virtually any area of their lives.
Consulting/Self-Care for Success is primarily aimed at assisting a client in determining and achieving personal goals, and addresses psychological difficulties only as they pertain to goal achievement. It is a collaborative process that aims for increased awareness, inner growth and behavior consistent with achieving goals.
Interests which can be addressed include self-growth, relationships, communication, focus and priorities, congruence of conscious values and behavior, personal and work life balance, and self-care. Performance improvement in sports, the arts and business can also be an area of focus.
An emphasis is often on developing management skills—stress management, emotional management, time management, etc. The impact on the individual, relationships and the workplace from how stress-related/self-care related difficulties are handled is huge in terms of life satisfaction, productivity and dollars.
Psychotherapy and Counseling
“I never thought I would like being in therapy, but I do—amazing”—a recent comment from a patient.
Traditional psychotherapy focuses on collaborating with the patient(s) to bring about change that will make their life work and feel better. The person’s wants, goals and readiness are key in determining the direction and methods of therapy.
Generally, I use two tracks of therapy approaches, oftentimes intertwined. One is a here-and-now, strategic, problem-solving, thinking reframing, behavior/self-care changing focus. The other is a more healing focused, trauma and old-learning processing approach.
The types of therapy methods I use include cognitive, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and a potent blend of these called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
In work with couples, I use what is needed of the above methods, as well as approaches to aid in communication and shifting ineffective relational patterns.
